Catio

When I moved to Houston from Austin, I was faced with the prospect of relocating 7 unadoptable cats that I inherited when a rescue group, for which I was fostering, closed. In Austin my home perched on the side of a hill and backed up to a natural forest, so I was able to adapt my catio to that site by building under the back of the house, and providing access through the hall closet upstairs. In Houston I sought an easy and affordable solution which led to a ranch-style house with an unused side yard containing a tool shed. In stages the catio became what it is today… a lovely and welcoming garden for my cats and their human visitors. After making it secure, easy access to the catio was accomplished through cat doors placed in two bedroom windows. This site, which already had 3 “walls,” only required a door at one end, shelving, shaded cover, seating, and non-toxic plants. The cats get along better with each other than when confined to the house, and I am free from their constant desire for attention as they go about their day enjoying what nature has to offer.
